Alabama basketball guard Labaron Philon named SEC Freshman of the Week

Alabama basketball has added eight freshmen and transfers this offseason, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to argue that Labaron Philo isn’t the most standout player among the newest members of the Crimson Tide.

He was an impact player on both sides of the ball in each of the first five games of Alabama’s young season. But he had 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, seven rebounds, nine assists, two steals and a blocked shot in the Tide’s 100-87 win over then-No. 25 Illinois earned him SEC Freshman of the Week honors on Monday.

“Philo showed why he’s a pro and raised the overall draft board,” Illinois head coach Brad Underwood said in his postgame press conference. “He’s a bad boy.”

The Crimson Tide scored 100 points last Wednesday night, but preseason All-American point guard Mark Sears, shockingly, didn’t add a single point to his total. Additionally, Alabama center Clifford Omoruyi scored six points in just 15 minutes of action due to foul trouble, an area where he has struggled as of late.

Alabama’s renowned depth was on full display against the Fighting Illini, and Philo’s aforementioned numbers helped lead the then-No. 8 Crimson Tide to a relatively comfortable and productive victory over another ranked program.

Alabama head coach Nate Oats said in his pregame press conference that he has already heard from NBA scouts about his freshman sensation. Philo is third on the team in scoring through five games and received a hard hat award for his efforts against the Fighting Illini. Philo noted that preparation and a calm mindset contributed to his fast start to the year.

“Really just being in the moment,” Philo said during the postgame press conference. “As a young guy, you probably have nervousness or a lot of butterflies. I just try to stay calm at all times and be confident. As soon as you walk into the gym, as soon as you step onto the court, then it’s all about confidence.”

The only other weekly award went to Tennessee defensive end Chaz Lanier, who was named SEC Player of the Week after dominant performances in wins over Virginia and then the No. 13 Baylor.
