Honda introduced a test production line for new batteries

Honda recently unveiled a solid-state battery demonstration production line that will be independently developed by Honda and aimed at mass production.

The line was built at Honda’s site in Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Honda is aiming to define the key characteristics of battery cells and begin using its solid-state batteries in electrified models that will be introduced in the second half of the 2020s.

Honda has set a goal for battery and fuel cell electric vehicles to make up 100% of new vehicle sales worldwide by 2040.

The battery production process will use roller pressing technology, unique only to the production of solid-state batteries. Honda is also aiming to reduce battery production costs by introducing measures such as production control technology.

Construction of the facility building was completed in the spring of 2024, and almost all key equipment has now been installed. Production is expected to begin in January 2025.
