To be eligible for a post-study work visa, international students pursuing a master’s degree in New Zealand must complete a minimum of 30 weeks of full-time coursework. New Zealand has now introduced new rules to ensure that students who complete a postgraduate master’s degree will remain eligible for a post-study work visa.

New Zealand has revised its post-study work visa rules to allow international students who have completed a 30-week postgraduate diploma and completed a master’s degree without a 30-week master’s degree program. The revised criteria ensure that students who complete a master’s degree after completing a postgraduate diploma do not lose their post-study work visa eligibility.

The new New Zealand post-study and work visa immigration rule states that students who studied a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) for 30 weeks and went straight into a Master’s degree, but were not enrolled in a Master’s degree within 30 weeks, are now eligible apply for a position. – Study Work Visa (PSWV) based on registration in the PGDip program.

This will give students greater flexibility in their studies and ensure they can continue to work after qualifying.

The post-study work visa allows students on a student visa to stay and work in New Zealand for up to 3 years, depending on their qualifications.

Students who have completed a qualifying qualification and then a higher level qualification that is not eligible for a PSWV have 12 months from the end date of their student visa to apply for a PSWV.

To apply for the PSWV, applicants must hold a New Zealand qualification, study full-time in New Zealand for the required period, and submit the application within the specified period.

With the Post Study Work Visa, students can work for any employer in any job as long as they have a Level 7 qualification or above and have studied full-time for at least 30 weeks in New Zealand.

You can also work in a job related to what you studied if your qualification is not at Level 7 or below. Your training must take place full-time in New Zealand for the full duration required to qualify. Your qualifications must also be on the list of qualifications eligible for a post-study work visa.

Changes to the list of qualifications eligible for a post-study work visa

To bring the list of qualifications eligible for PSWV into line with the Green List, the following changes are being made:

• PSWV candidates eligible to teach in secondary schools no longer require a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in science, mathematics, technology or Pacific Island languages.
• Candidates who have completed graduate degrees and meet the Board of Education registration requirements may obtain the PSWV to work as an elementary or secondary school teacher.
• The New Zealand Diploma of Engineering (Level 6) with a mechanical engineering focus has been added so mechanical technicians are eligible for the PSWV.
