Shapiro Administration Invests $2 Million in Community Opioid Prevention Efforts | Pennsylvania News

HARRISBURG, PA. The Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) announced $2 million in funding for community-based prevention services across Pennsylvania to prevent opioid use disorder (OUD).

According to DDAP, the funding was made possible by Mallinckrodt Opioid Settlement funds.

As Attorney General, Shapiro led a multi-state investigation that resulted in billions of dollars in settlement agreements with opioid manufacturers and distributors.

“Prevention is truly our first line of defense in preventing the development of substance use disorders,” said DDAP Secretary Dr. Latika Davis-Jones. “The Shapiro Administration is committed to providing critical prevention support and resources to all Pennsylvania cities, towns and communities. With this $2 million investment, DDAP will award approximately 10 grants of up to $200,000 each to eligible community organizations.”

To receive grant funds, grant applicants must propose activities aimed at the primary prevention of OUD and meet additional requirements.

DDAP says it has a strong focus on health equity within its grant opportunities.

Based on various criteria from the 2022 Pennsylvania Department of Health overdose death data, DDAP will select three grantees located in Philadelphia, three grantees located in Allegheny County, and four grantees from the remaining 19 eligible counties located in Pennsylvania, where the total the mortality rate is higher. than the state average.
