Path of Exile 2 was supposed to be released in Early Access on November 15, but there was another delay – although this time it was shorter.

Developer Grinding Gear Games posted a video on Tuesday in which game director Jonathan Rogers announced a three-week delay until December 6th. According to Rogers, it’s not because the game itself needs improvement. Rather, the team needs more time to “work with the server infrastructure” associated with migrating microtransactions.

The free-to-play series for consoles and PC makes money primarily from cosmetic microtransactions, with players hoarding skins for weapons, pets and decorations for years. Grinding Gear previously confirmed that players will be able to transfer their microtransactions from PC and console, and that Path of Exile 2 will have the same model as its predecessor, but the team found it more difficult to implement than expected.

“Not only do we have to build a bunch of new systems, but we also have to make sure that only the old data is backwards compatible with them,” Rogers said in the video, which you can watch below. “We have to make sure everything is perfect so no one loses what they paid for and no one gets their account hacked.”

Rogers added that the team could potentially start work on the original date, but did not want to take any chances. He also takes full responsibility for the delay and adds that there will be a livestream at launch to discuss everything Path of Exile 2 content.

Path of Exile 2 has been in development for a long time. It was announced in 2019 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The beta version was planned to launch in the summer of 2024, but was delayed to further improve the gameplay.

The studio was able to demonstrate its progress at Summer Game Fest 2024. The 30-minute demo of Digital Trends was immediately captivating. “For now, this looks like a solid free-to-play RPG for players who missed out Diablo 4 wave your hand or want more exciting dark fantasy adventures.”
