An MLB insider suggests that perhaps the Seattle Mariners should trade Brian Wu to the Boston Red Sox.

Both the Seattle Mariners and Boston Red Sox have a lot of moving parts this offseason.

The M’s went 85–77, missing the playoffs, while Boston also missed the playoffs, 81–81. Each team has clear needs: the Sox need to master starting pitching, and the M’s need to master a full-infield offense.

With the M’s seemingly having a surplus of arms and the Red Sox a surplus of bats, the two teams have often been linked in trade rumors over the past year.

It happened again on Monday when MLB insider Ken Rosenthal suggested that perhaps the Mariners could send Brian Woo to Boston for first baseman Triston Casas.

First things first: let’s look at why the deal makes sense. Casas is affordable. young. Still only 24 years old, Casas is under team control until 2028. He also provides the M’s with the hitting they need in the middle of the order, as he hit 24 homers in 2023 and 13 more in 2024 (in 63 games total). He also gives “M” a compliment to Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena.

Why doesn’t this make sense? The M’s already have a left-handed hitting first baseman in Luke Raley. If Casas comes in first every day, what will happen to Raleigh? Will he become a DH? Does he play the outfield and Arozarena becomes the DH? Plus, Wu is a mound player, and teams don’t like to trade away young pitchers.

Although he has dealt with injuries in his career, he went 9-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 22 starts last season. He is under team control through 2029 and would be a building block, especially if the M’s are unable to retain Logan Gilbert going forward.

In addition to the issues for the Mariners, the Red Sox will also need to address the first base issue if they are going to trade Casas.
