North East men’s hockey showed resilience with a comeback victory over BC.

▪ Northeastern (2-6-3) has been down this road before. Friday’s loss dropped the Huskies to 0-4-3 in conference play, marking the second straight season they have lost their first seven Hockey East games. Four of those contests ended in overtime, three on penalties, two of which were won by the Huskies.

After failing to beat BC goalie Jacob Fowler in the opener, Northeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Saturday on the first of two goals from sophomore Dylan Hrikovian.

North Reading native Jackson Dorrington’s first goal of the year made it 2-0 before Oscar Jellvik halved the Eagles’ lead.

Northeastern captain Jack Williams made sure BC’s momentum was short-lived, scoring 30 seconds later to put the Huskies back in front, 3-1. However, his side will face some difficulty opening the second period after Williams was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct due to high cross-checking.

NU, which had been struggling with a penalty, managed to beat it when BC called too many people with 40 seconds left in the major, prompting the Huskies’ bench to explode.

“That goal just meant a lot, especially since our captain took up five minutes,” said Grikovyan, whose empty net with three seconds left sealed the victory. “We really just wanted to kill him because he brings us so much.”

▪ BC (9-3-0) stopped five penalties during the two-game series, improving to 27 of 27 on penalties. Sophomore Ryan Leonard found the back of the net in both games and extended his hitting streak to six games. He has two wins Friday night and his 11 goals are tied with Denver’s Sam Harris for the national record.

▪ Bentley (9-4-1) moved into first place in the Atlantic Hockey America tournament after defeating Air Force with a pair of 2-0 wins. The Falcons did find success in their six-game homestand, going 5-1, and winning seven of their last eight games overall. Junior goalie Connor Hasley earned the honor in both games, making a total of 50 saves, and extended his shutout streak to three en route to tying a program record with his seventh career shutout.

▪ Saturday nights may be good for Boston University, but Fridays certainly won’t be kind to the Terriers. After a 4-2 win over UConn on Oct. 18, BU lost its next four contests Friday night and trailed Merrimack 3-2 entering the third period before scoring four goals to snap the skid with a 6-3 win. . .

Mansfield native Matt Copponi, a transfer from Merrimack to BU, scored a pair of goals, as did freshman Cole Eizerman as the Terriers improved to 6-5-1.

▪ UMass (6-6-2) should be pleased that its season series with Vermont is in the rearview mirror. The Minutemen lost a 3-2 decision on Sunday despite beating the Catamounts 40-19, with Vermont goalie Axel Mangbo making a career-high 38 saves to earn the win.

The game at Mullins Center came two weeks after the clubs met in a two-game series in Vermont, where the Catamounts scored 5 of 6 points, including a 4-0 win in which Mangbo stopped 26 shots.

Earlier in the weekend, UMass rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the third period to defeat Harvard 5-3 on Friday. Cole O’Hara’s four points (two goals, two assists) improved his season record to 6-14-20.

▪ Border Battle to Maine’s 1st round title, which included a 3-1 win over New Hampshire on Friday behind Albin Boihi’s 24-save performance. It marked the first win for the Black Bears (8-2-2) at the Whittemore Center since Feb. 2, 2019, ending a seven-game winless streak in Durham. The teams will meet again for a pair of games in Orono on Feb. 14-15.

▪ Junior Benny Halas made 32 saves Saturday to help UMass Lowell (9-3-0) salvage a split with UConn (1-0) and earn its first win over the River Hawks. Freshman Callum Tang started both nights for the Huskies, making 51 saves over the weekend, including 26 to win his first NCAA start, 4-1, on Friday.

▪ Providence (8-3-2) bounced back from an overtime loss to British Columbia last Tuesday by riding a 2-0 lead to Long Island for a 4-3 overtime win. Nick Possion took the win 58 seconds into the extra session. He also helped reach his early game goal of reaching 100 points for his career.
