How to apply for a ULEZ exemption

You can use TfL’s online check tool to find out if your car meets emissions standards, but you will need to provide a certificate of compliance unless TfL recognizes the vehicle as exempt. The vehicle manufacturer will be able to provide a certificate if you do not have one, but it is your responsibility to provide proof. Without it, you will be fined for entering the area without paying a fee.

If the online check shows that your vehicle meets the standards, no application is required and you are free to enter the zone.

Other vehicles exempt from ULEZ

Certain types of vehicles are automatically eligible for ULEZ tax exemption, namely:

• Historic cars: All vehicles manufactured before January 1, 1973 and registered in the historic vehicle tax class.
• London licensed taxi
• Definite defective Wheelchair accessible vehicles are also exempt until October 24, 2027.
• Specialized agricultural machinery
• Military equipment
• Others such as truck cranes, showmen’s cars And excavators

Please see TfL’s guide to rebates and exemptions for more information as not all vehicles are automatically exempt. In some cases, such as when purchasing showman cars, you will need to apply for a 100 percent discount.

How to apply for a ULEZ exemption

If you believe your vehicle should be exempt from ULEZ, you will need to register it with Transport for London.

Before you apply, you will need to have a London road user charging account, which can be done through this process. You will also need the following documents:

• Replica car V5C or equivalent outside the UK
• Certificate of Conformity or letter from the vehicle manufacturer indicating the European vehicle standard.
