A mother broke down after a passenger refused to give up her Economy Plus seat so she could sit with her son.

In a recent post published on the popular program “Am I The A**hole?” On a Reddit forum, a traveler asked if they were wrong for “making someone who changes places cry.” They explained that as soon as they were “settled” in their seats in the Economy Plus section of the plane, her mother approached her and asked her to change seats.

“A woman comes up and asks me to move to 32b so that her nine-year-old son can sit with her. I ask how much money she owes me back for the money I spent on the seat,” the traveler explained. “She says I’m cruel, leaving her son sitting alone anxiously.”

When they asked the mother if she offered to switch seats with the person who was next to her son, she said no because she “needed legroom” in her Economy Plus seat. In response, a Reddit user raised concerns about the mother’s parenting tactics, which upset her.

“I made it clear that she cares more about her own comfort than her son’s well-being,” the post continued. “If she cared, she would have given up her seat and moved back. She bursts into a scream filled with the words “HOW COULD YOU.”

However, 10 minutes after the incident, the mother was not sitting in her Economy Plus seat. Instead, the Reddit user spotted a man sitting happily next to her, “smirking about his nice promotion in the seat.” The traveler concluded that after this flight, their partner accused them of “publicly questioning their mother’s parenting and making her cry.”

In the comments to the post, the traveler made several clarifications about when he booked the ticket, and also detailed why he refused to change seats.

“When I booked my place, her place was already taken, so she booked her place first. It didn’t look like poor planning, it looked like she only wanted to pay for one premium seat and wanted to force me to give up my seat,” they explained.

The Reddit post quickly went viral, receiving more than 21,000 upvotes. In the comments, many criticized the mother for not purchasing a seat next to her child on the plane in advance.

“She is wrong, firstly, in failing to plan and book in advance so that her son is not left alone, secondly, in that she cannot put aside her comfort in front of her “precious son”, and thirdly, she thinks someone owes her everything for being a bad planner,” one person wrote.

“Her tears don’t change the fact that she put her comfort before her son’s needs. It’s her fault,” said another.

A third person responded: “When ANYONE asks to trade places, it’s ALWAYS in favor of the better one and they always throw a tantrum like this trying to get what they want when they’re told no.” Such people should be removed from the aircraft.”

This isn’t the first time a passenger’s in-flight experience has gone viral. Last month, a traveler sitting in the middle seat shared her “feminine rage” when two men on either side of her stretched their legs so far that she appeared to be crushed into her seat.

“Why would anyone even need so much space??? I tried to get him to move, but he didn’t want to,” she wrote in the caption of her video.
