The inaugural 2026 World Athletics Championships in Budapest will feature a new 4x100m mixed relay in which athletes will compete in national kits, representing both themselves and their national teams, athletics’ governing body said on Friday. announcing the list of disciplines.

The championship will be held every two years, with gold medalists receiving US$150,000 in what World Athletics says is the richest prize fund in the sport’s history.

In May, World Athletics unveiled plans to test new events such as the 4x100m medley relay and steeplechase in its four-year business strategy published to ensure more dynamic and exciting competitions.

About 400 athletes will take part in the championship, which will take place at the Budapest National Athletics Center in Hungary.

“This new global event will be a game changer for our sport and for our athletes,” World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said in a statement.

The inaugural championship is scheduled to take place over three evenings, from 11 to 13 September, with each session lasting less than three hours, aiming to offer a fast-paced event that will captivate viewers around the world.

The program will feature 26 individual events – 16 track and field and 10 running – and two relays, including the new 4x100m medley.

Other disciplines: 100 meters, pole vault, 200 meters, high jump, 400 meters, long jump, 800 meters, triple jump (W), 1500 meters, hammer (M), 5000 meters, javelin throw, 100 sprint meters/110 meters with barriers. , 400m hurdles and mixed 4x400m.
