Weather in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane: heatwave is about to arrive

South-eastern parts of Australia will be hit by a severe heat wave, with temperatures rising 15°C above the November average.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hynes said “hot weather” was expected this weekend with heat waves as north-easterly winds brought hot air to southern regions.

“The hottest hot spot today is in Victoria,” he said.

“South Australia experienced widespread high temperatures yesterday.

“Victoria is heating up today along with Tasmania, New South Wales and parts of the ACT.”

Mr Hynes said Melbourne should expect a high of 34C on Friday before warming to 36C on Saturday.

“Overnight temperatures will likely remain in the low to mid 20s, with a low around 22 or 23 degrees,” he said.

“While this is typical for northern Australia, it is unusual for the far south and is likely to result in sticky nights.”

The heatwave will peak in Victoria and Tasmania on Friday and Saturday before temperatures begin to fall.

“The second half of the weekend will see cooler weather and some rain,” Mr Hines said.

A heat wave will hit much of south-east Australia over the weekend, with many places becoming hot on Friday.

Australians in many parts of the south east are being warned that a heatwave is coming and should stay cool (think beachgoers in Melbourne).

“While there won’t be a cold snap, temperatures will drop 5 to 8 degrees and return to average.”

Sydney can expect the heat wave to arrive later than other parts of the south east.

“The weekend will be pleasant, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the upper 20s,” he said.

“Although not cold, the real heat will hit Sydney on Sunday or Monday when temperatures climb into the 30s.

“Western suburbs will feel the heat more intensely.”

While much of Queensland is currently experiencing rain, areas such as south Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads will see clearer skies.
