It’s November and we can feel winter tightening its grip in North India. With the onset of cold weather, geysers have become a necessity for many homes. Hot water is necessary for bathing and other household chores, which makes geysers a convenient appliance during the season. However, misuse of geysers can lead to serious, life-threatening accidents. These accidents include electrical shocks, fires, and even explosions.

To ensure safety and avoid accidents, we provide you with plenty of advice on how to use geysers carefully and responsibly at home.

Basic safety tips when using geysers

1. Do not leave the geyser on for too long.

Leaving a geyser on for long periods of time (basically, turn it on and forget it) is a common mistake that many people make. This habit will not only waste power, but will also increase the risk of overheating and possible explosions.

Always turn off the geyser immediately after finishing using it or before using it (as soon as the water gets hot).

2. Turn off the geyser while swimming.

It is recommended to turn off the water heater immediately before using it. Although most geysers have sufficient capacity – from 5 to 15 liters or more, it is not safe to keep the geyser on during use.

If electrical fluctuations occur, it may result in electric shock. Always turn off the geyser before swimming to minimize the risk.

3. Buy geysers only from certified brands.

When buying a new geyser, you need to opt for products from certified and reputable brands. Local or non-certified geysers may not have the required safety features due to cost cutting measures. These models are prone to damage and accidents, so investing in a quality unit will ensure greater safety and longevity.

4. Inspect the geyser before use.

If you are using a gas water heater for the first time this winter (a new gas water heater), a thorough check is necessary. Check the electrical connections and make sure that the device heats the water within safe limits, which should ideally be 45-50 degrees Celsius.

Additionally, having your gas water heater serviced before the next winter season begins can help identify and correct potential problems.

Stay safe by staying warm

A geyser is a convenient, indispensable accessory in winter, but its use should never compromise safety. Follow these tips to prevent accidents and ensure your geyser operates efficiently and safely. With proper care and use, you can enjoy a warm and carefree winter.
