WBBL 2024: Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers tied despite super over

The Perth Scorchers have kept their hopes of qualifying for the Women’s Big Bash League alive after a dramatic draw with the Sydney Sixers.

The Scorchers were bowled out for 126 in 19.2 overs, with Australia all-rounder Ash Gardner starring with figures of 4-21 for the Sixers.

The Sixers then achieved the same total at the end of their 20 overs despite opener Ellyse Perry’s 67 off 53 balls, leading to a super over in which both teams finished on 15 apiece.

The drawn match sees both teams on points, leaving the Scorchers fourth in the table and the Sixers sixth.

The top four teams will advance to the playoffs of the tournament.

The Scorchers were left to rue a 95-1 collapse in their first innings, with Beth Mooney scoring 44 and New Zealand’s Brooke Holliday adding 41 before they lost their final nine wickets for 31 runs.

Along with Gardner, leg spinner Meli Kerr and seamer Courtney Sippel took two wickets each, while 15-year-old all-rounder Caoimhe Bray bowled Mooney and played a sensational straight shot while also bowling.

Australia’s Perry anchored the Sixers’ innings but struggled for support as no other batter reached 20 and her international teammate Alana King declared 3-21 with leg spin.

Perry then scored a four and a six in Daisy Edgar’s super over before Mikayla Hinkley scored 14 from four balls for the Scorchers to level their total despite losing Mooney off the first ball.

In the day’s other game, the Melbourne Renegades beat the Hobart Hurricanes to move two points clear into second place.
