Residents demand pediatrician and gynecologist at Keylong Hospital

Residents of Lahaul and Spiti have urged the state government to appoint a pediatrician and gynecologist at the Keylong district hospital. The hospital currently has a surgeon, an orthopedist and an anesthesiologist, but the lack of pediatric and gynecological care makes it difficult for people to access the treatment they need.

Rigzin Samphele Khaireppa, a resident of Lahaul, says their area has become a thriving tourist destination since the opening of the Atal Tunnel. He adds that with the influx of visitors, demand for reliable healthcare facilities has increased, but the region lacks basic healthcare services. “We need the best health facilities to support tourism and ensure the well-being of local residents,” he says.

Kunga Bodh, Lahaul and Spiti District Council Member, highlights the urgent need for a pediatrician and gynecologist to provide essential health services directly to the people. As winter sets in and heavy snowfall approaches, residents face greater difficulties in accessing medical care outside the valley. “The government should send doctors who are willing to serve in this tribal area, especially during the harsh winter months,” he adds.

Local resident Mohan Lal Relingpa has criticized political parties for not fulfilling their promises regarding better health facilities made during election campaigns. “Once in power, they ignore the problems of citizens,” he adds.

Residents of Lahaul and Spiti are particularly concerned about the health of children and expectant mothers, who need constant access to medical care. “We urge the state government to prioritize hiring a pediatrician and a gynecologist at Keylong Hospital,” they added.

Lahaul and Spiti MP Anuradha Rana has also raised the issue with the government, advocating for better health facilities in the district. Meanwhile, the health authorities of Lahaul and Spiti have also informed the senior management of the Shimla Health Department about the vacant specialist posts at Keylong Hospital.
