ASU Football game against Oklahoma State was delayed due to weather conditions

ASU Football game against Oklahoma State was delayed due to weather conditions

ASU Football’s game against Oklahoma State was delayed two hours and 38 minutes Saturday night due to lightning in the Stillwater, Oklahoma area.

The game’s kickoff was moved from 4:00 p.m. MST to a 12:30 p.m. start in an attempt to combat lightning and thunderstorms, but the game was suspended at halftime with ASU leading 21-14.

The game later resumed with ASU winning 41–21.

Boone Pickens Stadium was vacated as a precaution during the delay, and the scoreboard read: “Thunderstorms and lightning are occurring in the area and we are suspending play until further notice.” If you are outdoors, please proceed calmly to the stadium seating area at this time.”

What the NCAA says about weather delays

The NCAA lightning rules state: “To resume athletics, lightning experts recommend waiting 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder and the last flash of lightning are at least six miles away from the venue. If lightning can be seen without thunder being heard, the lightning may be out of range and therefore less likely to pose a serious threat.

“At night, keep in mind that lightning can be seen from a much greater distance than during the day because clouds are illuminated from within. This greater distance may mean that lightning is no longer a serious threat. At night, use both the sound of thunder and observation of the lightning channel itself to decide when to reset the 30-minute return to play timer before resuming outdoor athletics.”

Calling early ASU vs. Oklahoma State debate now a moot point

There has been debate on social media about how the ASU-Oklahoma State game could be called for ASU due to inclement weather, with one interpretation of Big 12 rules saying ASU would win because two quarters were played and the Sun Devils came out on the field. 21-14.

But not everyone agreed. The wording states that “if more than half of the game is completed.” ASU and Oklahoma State played half, not more than half, of their games.

However, the debate is now a moot point as both teams finished the game with ASU winning 42-21.
