The Sydney Marathon has just become one of the 7 major events in the world.

Back in March, the people behind the TCS Sydney Marathon announced they were ditching the half marathon option for this year’s race and were focusing their full attention on the full marathon in a bid to help the event win Status of the world’s premier marathon. Focusing on the full distance of 42.195 kilometers allowed a record number of runners to join the race, with 25,000 runners taking part in this year’s full race, making it the largest of its kind ever in Australia. It has just been confirmed that the focus on the big race has paid off, with the Sydney Marathon now certified as the World’s Premier Marathon, which should be a boon for tourism in Sydney.

Until now, there have only been six major world marathons held in the world, taking place in London, Boston, Tokyo, Berlin, Chicago and New York. From 2025, the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by Asics will be the first major world marathon to take place on Australian soil.

Besides the fact that this is good for our tourism industry (growth visitor spending in New South Wales due to the marathon’s new status is estimated at $73 million over the next three years)landing Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) status means a major event for the Sydney race. The AWMM certification places the race among the world’s most renowned marathons and will attract renowned athletes from around the world to the Harbor City. For many competitive athletes, all AWMM events are must-race races, and participation in the Sydney Marathon is predicted to rise to from 33,300 in 2025 to 37,800 in 2027.

When is the Sydney Marathon 2025?

The first ever AWMM certified Sydney Marathon will take place Sunday 31 August 2025 The route will take runners from Miller Street in North Sydney through stunning Sydney Harbor with a spectacular finish in our world famous Opera House.
