Summer time is over. As we move forward in 2025

Have you already set your clocks back?

It’s time you remember to check your watches (and smoke detectors) as we gain an hour after Daylight Saving Time ends.

So when will we leap forward again and why? Here’s what you should know:

When did we retreat when daylight saving time ended?

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. This year the rollback date is Sunday, November 3rd.

When does Daylight Saving Time start in 2025?

Daylight saving time will begin on Sunday, March 9, 2025, according to TimeandDate.com. The clock will advance one hour until 3am when the short hand strikes 2am.

This change will be in effect until 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 2, when clocks will change to 1 a.m. and Daylight Saving Time will end.

Why do we practice daylight saving time?

According to Almanac.com, the idea behind Daylight Saving Time is that it allows us to make better use of natural daylight.

In the spring, moving the clocks forward an hour allows for more daylight in the evenings during the warmer months. Moving the clocks back an hour in the fall provides more daylight on winter mornings.

Proponents of the practice say brighter days and earlier evenings help boost the economy, although the practice began saving fuel during World War I, according to Almanac.com.

Despite the seemingly simple solution, daylight saving time has faced resistance in recent years, with many wanting to end the practice.

Who observes daylight saving time?

More than 70 countries use daylight saving time, less than 40% of all countries in the world, and many of them have different start and end dates. According to timeanddate.com, more than 1 billion people participate in this phenomenon each year.

The only regions of the United States that do not observe daylight saving time are Hawaii, parts of Arizona, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

Do all countries observe summer time?

We are not alone in retreating and pushing forward. Besides the United States, other countries in North America, Europe, and parts of Africa and Asia experience daylight saving time during the Northern Hemisphere summer, and parts of South America and Oceania during the Southern Hemisphere summer, which is the opposite phenomenon.

Will Daylight Saving Time end forever in the US?

Senator Marco Rubio of Florida is taking another step to stop us from changing the clocks with the Sunshine Protection Act.

The senator challenged the nation to “stop tolerating the ridiculous and outdated practice of setting our clocks forward and back. Let’s finally pass my Sunshine Protection Act and end forever the need to “step back” and “jump forward.”

In 2022, the US Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act. However, the legislation was not a priority in the House of Representatives, and there was disagreement over whether daylight saving time or standard time should be the law of the land, The Hill reported.

Ultimately, the sun set on the bill, which never made it to President Joe Biden’s desk.
