Rescio: The first millennium explores an Umbrian hotel

Amid the lush landscapes of Umbria – a region known as Italy’s “green heart” – lies Rescio, a bucolic 3,700-acre estate with a 1,000-year-old castle at its centre. It has seen the vicissitudes of history, from the passage of pilgrims, interest from emperors and popes, world wars, mass migration, and today, as a boutique hotel, boasts a star-studded guest book full of the names of those seeking escape from Hollywood.

Rescio was bought in 1994 by Count Antonio Bolza, and over the years his son, London-educated architect Count Benedict Bolza, and his wife Donna Nencia Corsini have reimagined and restored more than half of the estate’s 50 ruined buildings, working alongside other property owners to ensure authentic design throughout.

Carefully selected antiques, vintage furniture and artwork now adorn the eight houses available to rent across the estate, each with their own charm and character. At the end of May 2021, the 36-room Hotel Reschio opened on the estate; restored within the walls of a tenth-century castle, it includes a restaurant with a farm, a spa bath and an equestrian center.

The new linen-bound book, containing more than 200 images, offers the history of Rescio from A to Z, documenting lesser-known details and giving a behind-the-scenes look at the estate. Through chapters with titles such as “The King and Queen of Italy” and “Nostalgia,” readers are immersed in its history and recent transformations.

Those who want to go beyond the pages can book accommodation in a hotel or in restored manor houses. Count Bolza is behind the creation of every space, from interiors to landscape design. Working with BB Design Studio for Reschio, he featured hand-drawn furniture and lighting designs that were handcrafted locally, adding a personal touch. The estate’s charm and Italian authenticity guarantee a stay as unique as the landscape in which it is located.
