Re. Patrick MacDonald’s letter What would Tories cut? (Oct. 30)

In his recent letter to the Editor, Patrick MacDonald asks what (federal Conservative Leader) Pierre Poilievre would cut if prime minister.

Poilievre was a minister in (former prime minister) Steven Harper’s Conservative government. He supported Harper’s desire to cut support for seniors by cutting Canadian government senior support plans, Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement.

Harper, because he only had a minority government for most of his time as prime minister, sat in the weeds hiding his intentions. Only after (his party) achieved a majority did he pursue this long simmering ambition.

I urge seniors to consider this when voting in the next federal election. Don’t be fooled by Poilievre and these Conservative MPs. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing.

Reform and Conservatives have never been friends of the working class or the less fortunate in society.

Re. Patrick MacDonald’s letter What would Tories cut? (Oct. 30)

The (letter writer) states:

• 400,000 children have benefited from the (Liberal government’s school nutrition program and that the (federal) Conservatives voted against it.

• 650,000 Canadians have benefited from the Liberal government’s dental program and the Conservatives did not support it.

• 63% of Liberals and NDP supported the Pharmacare Act and 48% of Conservatives did not. Does that mean the other 37% of Liberals and NDP MPs did not support it and the other 52% of Conservatives MPs did?

• 3.7 million families have received the child care benefit and it has lifted 350,000 children out of poverty. Over what time frame? (The writer) does not say.

• The Liberals have reduced small business taxes, lowered taxes for the middle class, and raised taxes on the wealthy.

• The Liberals have implemented the $10 a day child care program across the country. (The writer) does not say whether that increased or decreased the number of children currently in daycare, does not say whether it has increased or decreased the number of available daycare spots nationally and does he say what impact it has had on wait times for parents .

• The Liberals have a firm climate plan.

• (Federal Conservative Leader) Pierre Poilievre lacks empathy towards the less fortunate.

Does (the writer) have credible sources to back up all of these claims? If so, please cite them. If not, from where does he get his numbers and assertions? Are these merely his opinions?

First of all it is amazing to have such a close race with the NDP actually having that many voters, and in the end winning?

I guess rising overdoses, skyrocketing crime and cost of living means nothing to them?

How things have changed for Halloween, and for me, in my life.

As a kid, I took a pillowcase to collect treats, mostly hard candy. One time I had so much, I dropped off my loot at home and went out to get more. When I got home, I found out my mom was giving my loot to (other trick-or-treaters) who came by my house.

After I was married and had children, I used to accompany them to collect treats. One year, it was so cold their only costumes were masks and garbage bags over their parkas. Thankfully, it was so cold we only managed about a city block before they cried, “let’s go home Dad”

Years later, my common-law partner and I decided to sell our respective homes and buy a different home together. The first year in our new location, she took her only daughter out to collect treats. I stayed home to give out our treats. Being a bit of a numbers nerd, I keep track of the number of trick-or-treaters. That first year I counted 86.

Over the years, I kept track in order to determine how much candy and treats to buy. The last year we were in that home, we had eight. The bad news was I bought a lot more and because I am not only a numbers nerd but I also cheap, I knew we had to eat the residual.

I currently live in a manufactured home park whose location does not lend itself to trick-or-treaters. In the six years, I have lived here, not one trick-or-treater (has come by).

Enjoy these times. Enjoy Halloween and all the kids who dress up and yell “trick or treat” on your doorstep.

Let me state right off the bat, I am a proud BC Conservative and have been a party member for more than a year.

Regardless, I will do everything I can to ensure that (Kelowna Center MLA-elect Kristina Loewen is not the BC Conservative candidate in the next election.

Strike one was arrogantly declaring victory on election night before (the result) was called. When I challenged her on this, she said she did no such thing. Read her own comments and judge for yourself.

Strike two was cowering away from public discourse during the campaign, refusing to participate in debates, ducking the media and not letting voters get to know her.

Strike three is blocking people on her social media who disagree with her.

Kelowna Center should have been a relatively easy BC Conservative win, not a nail-biter it was and subject to a judicial recount.

(I feel) she was a terrible candidate and will be a terrible MLA. Voters in Kelowna Center deserve better and I expect next time around to be offered better.

Over 400.00 children have benefited from the (federal) Liberal (government’s) school nutrition program. (Leaser) Pierre Poilievre and the (federal) Conservatives voted against the program.

Nearly 650,000 Canadians have benefitted from the Liberal dental plan, which the Conservatives did not support.

The Pharmacare Act came into force Oct. 10. The Liberals and NDP (63%) supported this plan and 48% of Conservatives did not support the plan

The Child Care Benefit has been distributed to more than 3.7 million families and has lifted 350,000 children out of poverty. The Conservatives voted against that plan.

The Liberals reduced the small business tax, lowered taxes for the middle class and raised taxes on the wealthy to ensure they pay their fair share.

The $10 per day daycare plan, which the Conservatives did not support, is being implemented nationally, .

The Liberals have implemented financing for the building of much-needed housing, which Poilievre has vowed to scrap.

The Liberals have a firm climate plan and the Conservatives have “Axe the (carbon) tax”. Not a concern for our grandchildren.

It occurs to me that (US Republican presidential candidate) Donald Trump and Poilievre lack what was always a great Canadian trait towards the less fortunate—empathy. Both the Republicans (in the US) and the Conservatives (in Canada) have proven records of catering to the wealthy.

What are the benefits that Poilievre will cut and will his fellow Canadians support those cuts? I hope not.

Patrick MacDonald
