Prosecutors intend to try teens as adults in Augusta murder case

BUTLER COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) – There are new developments Thursday in the case that rocked the Augusta community after 93-year-old Joan Johnson was found dead in her home last year.

The suspects, two 14-year-old girls arrested and charged with first-degree murder in August, appeared in court Thursday where prosecutors filed a motion to increase their charges.

Prosecutors are now trying to prosecute the two teenagers as adults.

A hearing is scheduled for Dec. 10 to determine whether the girls will be tried as adults.

Both girls have pleaded not guilty to the charges and are currently being held in juvenile detention.
