New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe didn’t know it the moment he hit the game-winning hit in his team’s 11-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series.

“I didn’t know. I was hustling,” he said during Fox’s post-fight show. “I didn’t know I got it, but then I passed out as soon as it went out.”

The 23-year-old gave the Bronx Bombers the lead with a grand slam in the third.

It was a real twist of fate.

In the second inning, Volpe may have been kept off the board when he failed to correctly read the trajectory of Austin Wells’ double to deep center. At the very least, Volpe could have scored easily, and Wells might even have gotten a triple if his teammate hadn’t faltered so much on the base path.

All of that was forgotten when the center infielder cleared the fence.

Volpe capped off his performance by helping score another try in the eighth round. He turned a single into a double, stole third, then came home on a fielder’s choice.

Volpe is the toast of New York at this point. It’s the result of a storybook for a man who grew up in New Jersey and rooted for the Yankees.

However, his heroics will largely be lost to history if New York loses the World Series, which is one of the downsides of playing for this franchise. By and large, Yankees players don’t become October legends. almost win it all.
