Teri Garr, actor, comedian and multiple sclerosis ambassador, dies at 79

Teri Garr, an actress and comedian who later became an ambassador for multiple sclerosis after being diagnosed in 1999, died Tuesday at her home in Los Angeles.. She was 79 years old and died from complications of multiple sclerosis.

Garr began her entertainment career as a dancer in nine Elvis Presley films, including Viva Las Vegas And Clambake. She transitioned from dancing to acting with bit parts. Dr Kildare, Batman, Star Trek, That Girl, The Bob Newhart Show And Maud.

“She achieved some of the outstanding results of the period in terms of what was then considered quality television,” noted Kelly Kessler, assistant professor of media and film studies at DePaul University. “But then we see her emerge, making a natural transition from the early dance routines she performed in the Elvis films… to the variety stage on 1970s television, where she performs alongside Cher and the Pointer Sisters.”

Garr starred in some of the biggest films of her time, including Talk, Mister Mom, Oh God!And Close Encounters of the Third Kind. But her breakthrough role was the sexy Inga in Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks.

“And I think she got the role by simply answering the call of the cattle,” Kessler said.

Garr received an Oscar nomination for her role as Dustin Hoffman’s neurotic girlfriend Sandy in the 1982 film. Tootsie. Marty Cook, a comedy professor at Emerson College, says Garr refined and inverted the “smart, dumb blonde” stereotype. Her woeful intelligence softened the frivolous roles Garr often played.

“She had a vulnerability that made audiences really like her. I thought her performance as Sandy was incredible,” Cook said. “By taking this character to the next level, she actually helped open the door for roles like Phoebe in Friends.

Garr would later appear on Friends as Phoebe Buffay’s biological mother. According to Cook, it was perfect casting. “In a way, she helped the writers define Phoebe’s role.”

After she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, Garr continued to work. The latter part of her career was much like the beginning, with small roles in major television shows. Following the release of her memoir in 2005, Garr told WHYY’s: Fresh air that her acting life unexpectedly prepared her for life with a chronic illness.

“Because when you start living in Hollywood, it’s 99% ‘get out of here!’ rejection and you have to develop rhino skin,” Garr said. “But you always have to keep that butterfly spirit inside.”

Garr may be “a comic genius that has been overlooked for generations,” Kessler says. “If you weren’t around and didn’t pay attention to what she did in the ’70s and ’80s, then you missed it.”
