Long before pranks and viral TikTok challenges, Friends co-stars Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc were the undisputed prank kings. As fans around the world rewatch Friends in memory of Perry, who passed away on Oct. 28, 2023, one story keeps popping up—a ridiculous, show-long prank that Perry and LeBlanc played on their show’s co-creator David Crane.

Here’s the premise: Crane, one of the show’s masterminds, had a special… aversion to toilet humor. Just the thought of it made him shiver. And that’s all Perry and LeBlanc needed to know. They egged him on for ten years, telling jokes about the bathroom with deadpan seriousness. And they did it all without Crane noticing—at least not right away. According to LeBlanc in David Wild’s book Friends… Until the End: The One Who Has Ten Years, “Perry and I, just to egg him on, will offer him toilet humor. And we will present it with a straight face in front of everyone.” Classic Chandler and Joey!

As LeBlanc recalled, they liked to “offer scenes” where Joey suddenly needed to go to the bathroom or disappear in the middle of a conversation. One of their favorite courses? Joey would say, “I have to go,” and close the door and disappear. “Then I’ll leave. I won’t be back until the end of the scene,” LeBlanc said. But Crane’s reaction was always priceless. “I have to say, I don’t like it,” he once told LeBlanc, admitting that he couldn’t concentrate on the rest of the scene because all he could imagine was Joey, “just there, crap.” **”. Kee Chandler’s sarcastic smirk.

One of the fan favorite scenes may be a relic of this joke. In Season 7 Episode 10, Joey comes out of Chandler and Monica’s bathroom with a newspaper and walks around as if he had been there the whole time. Did “Bathroom Duet” pull this on Crane? May be. After all, it has the same absurdity that they loved to present and the fans loved to watch.

LeBlanc also shed light on how Perry and the Friends team collaborated with their writers to improve each episode. He said the writers were some of the “best on television” and were greatly underrated but were crucial to every punchline. While the actors deserve the laughs, LeBlanc emphasized that “the funny ones were the writers,” although there was something magical about the way the actors delivered each line. After all, television is a team sport.

Chandler’s portrayal of Bing Perry—sarcasm, quirks and all—played a huge role in Friends becoming the cultural icon it became. And this joke is just one reminder of how much fun they all had on set. Despite the ups and downs of fame, addiction and life after Friends, Perry and his co-stars remained as close as they were on screen. During the 2021 Friends reunion, they described each other as “family” – a bond forged through years of friendship and endless pranks.

After Perry’s death, there was less laughter in the world. For fans, however, these stories keep his spirit alive, reminding us that Chandler Bing and the man who played him will be remembered forever.
