Governor Lombardo Activates Nevada National Guard on Election Day

Governor Lombardo Activates Nevada National Guard on Election Day

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Nevada announced Monday that Gov. Joe Lombardo will activate a limited contingent of National Guard troops to assist law enforcement on Election Day, Nov. 5.

The state said this was done to prepare for a safe and smooth Election Day and mirrors past election procedures.

“This is one of many proactive steps the state is taking to ensure that all possible resources are available to respond in a timely manner to any issues that arise,” the state said in a media release.

60 National Guard members will be placed on standby at National Guard installations in Carson City and Las Vegas.

If the need arises, the state said these activated personnel will be able to assist with traffic control, major weather events, communications and other local law enforcement needs.

“After consulting with stakeholders across the state, I have determined that it makes sense to activate the National Guard out of an abundance of caution at this time. We do not anticipate that these personnel will be needed,” Governor Lombardo said.

“As a first responder, I know firsthand the importance of being prepared, and this decision reflects my commitment to election day safety and preparedness. As always, I am deeply grateful to the men and women of our National Guard and appreciate their service to our state and country.”

Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar said he shares the governor’s commitment to safety, preparedness and transparency.

“This proactive decision helps us make the most of available resources throughout Nevada. Our election officials and law enforcement officials have been preparing for the November 5th election for years. This frees up their resources on Election Day so they can focus on conducting a safe and secure election.” – Aguilar said.
