Ref Watch: Dermot Gallagher analyzes the West Ham penalty that saw Erik ten Hag sacked by Manchester United and more | Football news

In the latest episode of Ref Watch, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher looks at key incidents from the weekend, including West Ham’s late penalty in the win over Manchester United and Arsenal’s disallowed winning goal against Liverpool.

West Ham 2-1 Manchester United

INCIDENT: United defender Matthijs de Ligt made contact with West Ham striker Danny Ings, but David Coote initially refused to continue play. After Michael Oliver asked him to go to the VAR monitor, Coote awarded West Ham a penalty, which Jarrod Bowen scored.

DERMOT SAYS: “I doubt it, but I think he saw the thighs close and thinks De Ligt entered him. He quickly looked around, made his conclusion, he is recommended.”

“However, this is a key issue, it is recommended. We all say that you walk up to the monitor and are firmly convinced that everything will change.

“This is because by definition you are sent to an observer because they think you have made a clear and obvious mistake.

“It will be at the discretion of the judge, but they retain all options. I really thought he would stick to the decision on the field because the more I saw it, the more convinced I was that it wasn’t a penalty.”

Sky Sports News Ref Watch analyzes the late penalty incident in the Premier League match between West Ham and Manchester United.

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “We came to a conversation about the referee’s decision on the field. I don’t know why VAR Michael Oliver felt the need to get involved in this.”

“Kut had to be strong in this situation. But because it was Michael Oliver and he is a senior judge, was this a case of not wanting to undermine the authority of the senior judge?”

SUE SMITH SAYS: “This is a really bad use of VAR. The judge made the right decision from the start. There is contact, but there will always be contact. I thought the referee would go and say: “Yes, I understood everything from the beginning.” “

Arsenal – Liverpool 2:2

INCIDENT: A late goal from Gabriel Jesus and Arsenal was disallowed when Anthony Taylor struck for a foul before the ball went into the net after Jakub Kivior had interfered with Dominik Szoboszlai.

DERMOT SAYS: “It’s something out of nothing. The referee had clearly given a foul to Kiviora, I think, for jumping on his opponent.

“He called a foul on Kivior, not Kai Havertz. It’s one of those times when the referee fixes it, he fixes it. “Games are 50/50 decisions and this is one of them.”

Sky Sports News Ref Watch the debate over whether Arsenal’s late goal against Liverpool should have been disallowed

SUE SMITH SAYS: “I don’t consider this a violation. The score is 50:50. Szoboszlai did not fight for the ball. But why did he delay the whistle?

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “He calls the first foul but doesn’t whistle for it.

“He lets it work for a bit and then whistles when Havertz lifts the ball over Caoimhin Kelleher. He made his decision a long time ago, but did not whistle for it.

“I don’t think this is a violation. I thought Liverpool were lucky here.”

Crystal Palace – Tottenham 1-0

INCIDENT: Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven brought down Ismaila Sarr, who fired at goal but was not sent off by referee Darren Bond for the challenge.

DERMOT SAYS: “It’s the judge’s decision, he has a better view than me. They thought he was too far from the goal, too far from the goal and going away from the goal.”

Dermot Gallagher explains how Mickey van de Ven escaped a red card for killing Ismaila Sarr.

“That was their excuse. I think it’s the judge’s decision. There is no doubt that he is moving away from goal.”

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “I thought the yellow card was correct, Sarr was running to get another shot on goal, I think (Destiny) Udogi will probably be able to get it wide. That doesn’t mean Sarr runs down the middle.”

SUE SMITH SAYS: “The ball, running away from the goal, is saved by Van de Ven. If he had gone towards goal it would have been a red card.”

Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle

INCIDENT: Eddie Howe’s side looked to score a penalty for Levi Colville’s challenge on midfielder Bruno Guimarães, but Simon Hooper waved the play away and replays showed the contact occurred outside the box.

DERMOT SAYS: “It’s outside the penalty area! I think he missed a foul, that’s a foul and a yellow card.”

Cole Palmer repeated the ridiculous move again, this time against Newcastle’s Fabian Schar.

“It’s not red, there are players around and the ball is going the wrong way. But it’s a foul.”

INCIDENT: Hooper awarded Chelsea a late penalty for Dan Burn’s holding of Christopher Nkunku, but then changed his mind after VAR intervention when there was minimal contact.

DERMOT SAYS: “That’s what VAR is for. I didn’t think it was a penalty then, but now it’s not a penalty.”

“Jared Gillett gave a good recommendation to send it to the screen, and Simon Hooper looked at it with a clean slate and said he was wrong. This VAR works perfectly.”

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “It’s not really a penalty. Both players actually slip and try to hold on to each other to stay steady.

“I don’t think Bern has enough contacts to fall to the ground like that. Good use of VAR.”

SUE SMITH SAYS: “The retention was minimal. When Nkunku returns to the circle, he simply holds it for a split second. That’s not enough for a penalty.”

Aston Villa 1-1 Bournemouth

INCIDENT: Aston Villa saw captain John McGinn’s first goal disallowed after the ball rolled out of play before Ollie Watkins passed it to the Scotland midfielder.

John McGinn’s goal against Bournemouth was disallowed by VAR after they ruled Ollie Watkins failed to keep all the ball in play during the build-up, but was the decision correct?

DERMOT SAYS: “I think it’s just out. When you watch Ollie Watkins, he comes back with the ball and thinks he’s out.”

“He doesn’t even celebrate. When he passes the ball to McGinn, he almost gives up, and when McGinn scores, he just stands there!”

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “The players’ reaction. I saw the replay and wasn’t sure it came out. But the beauty of VAR is that I don’t mind the slow motion replay!

“There’s enough daylight between the ball and the line for you to see it. At normal speed you won’t see it.”

INCIDENT: Antoine Semenyo was booked by Chris Kavanagh for simulation after he went down in the box following a challenge from Matty Cash.

DERMOT SAYS: “I don’t think it’s a simulation. In this situation, just play on. He falls easily, but it’s not a dive. Often there is a third element to this. The third element is to do nothing.”

SUE SMITH SAYS: “Don’t do anything. You can see Cash touching the ball, so it’s not a penalty. But it’s definitely not a jump.”

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “Kavanagh was happy with the cards at the weekend. Every decision he made was a yellow card. Thirteen cards is a lot. He felt he should continue to give yellow cards for minor offences.”

Brentford 4-3 Ipswich

INCIDENT: A penalty was awarded to Thomas Frank’s side following a VAR review after Lewis Smith initially awarded a free kick for a foul on Harry Clarke on Keane Lewis-Potter.

DERMOT SAYS: “If you look, it starts outside the box but he drags it inside. The judge doesn’t see it from his angle.”

“VAR doesn’t even have to send the referee to the screen, it’s a real incident when he goes down.”

INCIDENT: Clarke was shown a second yellow card on his first Premier League start for the same offense which resulted in a penalty.

SUE SMITH SAYS: “I thought the second yellow was very sharp. “It’s definitely a violation, but I just thought it was more of a violation than a second yellow.”

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “It’s tough, but I understand it. Proximity to the gate and where Lewis-Potter is heading. It’s a little reckless.”

Brighton 2-2 Wolves

INCIDENT: Brighton winger Kaoru Mitome was not shown a yellow card after clearing the ball against Wolves.

DERMOT SAYS: “You can go too deep into this issue. Is it delaying the restart? No.

“There is no player there who can resume the game. There’s another ball they could pick up. This will not delay the resumption of play.”

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “It’s driving me crazy. Balls are strewn across the field. (Gary) O’Neal, a former player, wants to see someone punished for something like this?

“There was one with Luis Diaz and he went two or three yards, there was no one around. Do the players raise their hands, wanting the players to be warned? This is funny.”

SUE SMITH SAYS: “Although I understand what they are talking about. When you see other players getting yellowed for this, you need to be consistent. I understand the disappointment.”

Leicester 1-3 Nottingham Forest

INCIDENT: Leicester wanted a penalty after striker Jamie Vardy claimed he had been held down by Nikola Milenkovic, but referee Craig Dawson said no.

DERMOT SAYS: “Not for me. They touch him lightly, but he grabs his own ankle and that’s what brings him down.”

STEPHEN WARNOCK SAYS: “Perhaps he just brushed Vardy and cut his heel, but it’s very difficult to look into that.”
