Winnipeggers received medals for the city’s 150th anniversary

A group of Winnipeggers were awarded medals Saturday as part of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

“Winnipeg is a fantastic city, and what makes it fantastic are the people,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “We were able to recognize 30 people who make outstanding contributions to our city every day, and they do it quietly, consistently, simply by doing their part to make Winnipeg a better place and improve the lives of others around them.”

Over the past month, Winnipeg city councilors have held their own ceremonies to recognize people in their communities for their contributions.

Saturday’s medal winners also planted a tree in their honor at Assiniboine Park.

“You’ll be able to come to the park regularly, year after year, and see that tree growing and always remember that it recognizes your contribution,” Gillingham said.

As the city continues to celebrate its 150th anniversary, Gillingham was asked what he thinks the next 150 years will look like.

“I hope that that kindness, that kind of dedication to the community will be replicated and multiplied, you know, many times over to continue to build the city that we all want to live in,” he said.
