LOS ANGELES, Calif. (WSAU) – The Menendez brothers are set to return to court for the first time in nearly three decades as they hope to convince a judge to reduce their sentences and allow them to go free.

According to the New York Post, during a status hearing on Monday, Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are currently in prison for life without the possibility of parole, will ask Judge Michael Jesich to weigh new evidence that their father’s alleged sexual abuse caused the shotgun murders of their parents in 1989 in their Beverly Hills home.

Judge Jesic has not yet decided whether they will appear from prison in person or virtually. In addition, the brothers’ lawyers will ask for their sentences to be commuted from first-degree murder to manslaughter, which would result in the reversal of their 50-year to life sentences at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego, California.
