Take another look at the bag of Fresh Gourmet tortilla strips on your kitchen counter: There might be fried onions inside.

Packages that were supposed to contain tortilla strips are being recalled due to a possible mix-up in which tortilla strips were replaced with fried onions, regulators said.

They were sold in many states, including Michigan. Many retailers list them for sale on their websites, including Walmart, Kroger, Target, Save-A-Lot and others.

Sugar Foods is recalling Santa Fe-Style 3.5-ounce Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips bags due to possible contamination with wheat, according to a recall notice issued by the Food and Drug Administration. Crispy Onion Strips contain wheat, which is not listed on the tortilla strips label.

The recall announcement states that “people who have a wheat allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat are at risk of having a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.”

To date, no cases of the disease have been reported.

According to the FDA, the incident began when a customer reported that a bag of tortilla strips contained the company’s onion strips.
