The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, recently reiterated his commitment to demolishing illegal structures in Abuja despite growing opposition.

It would be recalled that during his swearing-in, Wike stressed that the initiative was aimed at restoring the master plan of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and ensuring compliance with environmental requirements.

“We will not bow to pressure. The goal is to create a clean and organized city,” Wike said.

However, critics argue that the demolition disproportionately affects vulnerable communities.

Protesters expressed concern about the lack of alternative housing, which could lead to further hardship for displaced people.

For example. Former APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Timi Frank, accused Wike of using the demolition as a cover for personal gain.

“This is nothing more than a land grab,” Frank said.

Frank stated that the canceled plots are being transferred to Wike’s associates.

He therefore called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and stop the demolition.

PDP chief criticizes Wike over FCT demolition

David Itopa, a prominent NDP figure, speaking exclusively with Legit.ng also criticized Vike’s approach, warning against abuse.

“Those who know Wike from Rivers State are not surprised. This demolition campaign appears to be a scheme to benefit his cronies.”

He further warned:

“FCT is not Vike’s personal property. He must exercise restraint and address these issues with greater sensitivity to people.”
