The family claims that the youth was stripped and forced to chant Jai Shri Ram in Meerut; police deny claims – ThePrint – PTIFeed

Meerut (UP), Nov 25 (PTI) A young man was beaten, stripped and forced to chant Jai Shri Ram on Monday, his family alleged. However, police denied that the accused stripped him and forced him to chant and said prima facie it appeared to be an act of hostility.

The incident took place around 8 pm on Saturday when Gulfam, a resident of Sophipur village in Pallavpuram, was returning home after training at a private shooting range in Mangal Pandey Nagar, his father Aftab said.

Aftab alleged that Gulfam was taken to Victoria Park by three youths on a motorcycle, where they beat him, stripped him and forced him to chant Jai Shri Ram. They also took his mobile phone.

The victim’s family members also stated that he lost consciousness after being beaten and stripped.

However, police rejected allegations of stripping and forced chanting.

SHO, Civil Lines Mahaveer Singh said, “There is no mention in the FIR of forcing the victim to chant Jai Shri Ram. This is a clear case of hostility between young people.” Based on Aftab’s complaint, an FIR was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 324 (causing mischief), Circle Officer, Civil Lines, Abhishek Tiwari.

Efforts are on to arrest the accused, SHO Singh said.

Gulfam is currently undergoing treatment in a private hospital. He is preparing for a national shooting competition, his family said. PTI KOR ABN HIG
