Maharashtra MVA Alliance lost recent assembly elections

What a story

The recent Maharashtra assembly elections have forever changed the political landscape of the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti coalition won 235 seats with a vote share of 49.6%.

Meanwhile, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) managed to win only 49 seats with a vote share of 35.3%.

The result has serious implications for Rajya Sabha representation from Maharashtra, especially for Sharad Pawar, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Sanjay Raut.

MVA Rajya Sabha leader’s return remains uncertain after election results

The election results overshadowed the return of several MVA leaders to the Rajya Sabha.

Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president, along with Chaturvedi and Raut of the Shiv Sena (UBT), are unlikely to return due to lack of party support.

The current six-year tenure of Pawar and Chaturvedi, which began on April 3, 2020, will end on April 3, 2026.

Raut’s term will end on July 22, 2028.

BJP’s victory strengthens its prospects in Rajya Sabha

The BJP’s victory in Maharashtra increases its chances of winning a majority in the Rajya Sabha as the state sends 19 members to the Upper House.

The BJP currently has seven seats from Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha.

The Congress has three seats: Shiv Sena one, Shiv Sena (UBT) two, NCP three, NCP (SP) two and Republican Party of India (Athawale) one.

The total strength of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha has reached 112.

With 95 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, support from allies and six nominated members, the BJP’s strength rises to 112.

While there are no Rajya Sabha vacancies in Maharashtra anytime soon, there are 10 vacancies from other states, of which the BJP is likely to win more than half.

Four nominated membership vacancies are also up for sale.

These developments could take the BJP-led alliance past the halfway point in the 245-member House.

Defeat of the MVA coalition despite previous statements

The MVA coalition suffered a crushing defeat despite senior leaders earlier declaring that they would defeat Mahayuti.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray did not believe the election results, calling them “unexpected and incomprehensible”.

He said he couldn’t believe Maharashtra would behave this way after listening to him during the coronavirus pandemic, as “Kutumb Pramukh“or the head of the family.
