Search and rescue boat Corrib Mask emerges from the water – The Irish Times

Due to circumstances beyond their control, Corrib Mask Search and Rescue (CMSAR) had to pull a rescue boat from the water in Lisloughry, Lough Corrib.

CMSAR would like to reassure all lake users that while response times at Corribe will be slightly slower than previously, it continues to provide a 24-hour rescue service (365 days a year).

This is also a time to remind all water users to have communications equipment on hand and to always wear properly fitted life jackets. Don’t hesitate to call immediately when something goes wrong. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard to provide you with the services you need.

Illegal netting

Inland Fisheries Ireland has secured a man’s conviction for illegally netting salmon on the River Nore.

Mr Francis Kennedy, of Oaklawns, Paulstown, Co Kilkenny, was charged with illegally catching salmon in a catch and release fishery. When Mr Kennedy was searched in his car in Clonamery, Co Kilkenny, two wild Atlantic salmon were found in his possession.

Linda Connor, South East Region Director, said: “This sentence highlights the ongoing problem of illegal use of salmon nets and IFIs’ zero tolerance for such behaviour. The number of wild salmon returning to Ireland has increased from approximately 1.76 million in 1975 to 171,700 in 2022. This is a catastrophic decline in less than one generation.”

The case was heard at Kilkenny District Court on 22 October 2024. Kennedy was fined €300 and ordered to pay €400 in legal costs to the IFI. The incident occurred on June 30, 2024.

Live bait

A fisherman has been convicted of using live roach to catch pike by the Fisheries Council. Mr Alexander Gavryuchenkov of Ewings Bar Apartments in Carlow was found to have been illegally using live fish as bait. The incident occurred near Ballytiglea Lock on the River Barrow, Borris, County Carlow.

“The use of live bait is prohibited by law to prevent the transfer of non-native species between freshwater systems. The vast majority of anglers in Ireland fish responsibly and follow relevant government regulations,” says Linda Connor, IFI South East Director.

The incident occurred in violation of the bylaw prohibiting the use of live fish as bait in fresh water.

Gavryuchenkov was also accused of having more than 750 grams of pike meat. Due to statutory conservation measures, anglers are not allowed to possess more than 0.75 kg of pike meat or parts. He was fined 300 euros and ordered to pay 400 euros in reimbursement to the MFI.

The incident occurred on March 25, 2024. The case was heard at Kilkenny District Court on 22 October 2024.
