Sony is reportedly testing a new PlayStation handheld console that will compete with the Nintendo Switch

Sony is reportedly testing a new PlayStation handheld console that will directly compete with the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo has almost always cornered the handheld gaming market. For years, this giant gaming company had few competitors, with the Gameboy, Nintendo DS and, most recently, the Switch virtually dominating the handheld market. No matter how hard they tried, others, including Sony in past generations, couldn’t stay afloat for long.

However, a new report from Bloomberg has revealed that Sony is reportedly testing an all-new PlayStation handheld console that will be a direct competitor to the Switch.

According to Bloomberg, Sony is developing a new portable console that will allow you to play PlayStation 5 games on the go, like Nintendo Switch games that can be played anywhere.

The portable device is reportedly still years away from being available, and the company may ultimately decide not to bring it to market. After all, the release of the Switch 2 is just around the corner, and there have even been talks that Microsoft is going to develop its own portable device.

Although Valve had success with its portable gaming console, the Steam Deck, neither Sony nor Microsoft were able to make a serious inroad into the market. Although this may soon change.

Sony originally wanted Portal to be a Switch competitor.

PlayStation Portal

PlayStation Portal is Sony’s latest handheld device that allows PS5 owners to mirror their screen.

Although Sony released Portal in 2023, the need for an internet connection to stream games doesn’t make it a direct competitor to the easy-access Switch.

However, sources told Bloomberg later in the report that the original plan was for Portal to function as a standalone device and be a competitor to Nintendo’s PlayStation.

Before Portal, Sony’s last handheld console in development was the PS Vita, which sold approximately 10-15 million units over its lifetime.

A Sony representative was asked to comment directly on the situation but declined to do so. However, given that this news has now become public, there is a possibility that the company will say more on this matter soon.
