Tortilla strips in 22 states contain wheat allergens: FDA

Sugar Foods said it is recalling its Fresh Santa Fe Style Gourmet Tortilla Strips after several customers reported that their store-bought bags contained crispy onion strips (another Sugar Foods brand product) rather than the expected product. .

On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration released a company statement saying the confusion led to contamination with an undeclared wheat allergen because the crispy onion strips contained wheat, which is not listed on the tortilla strips’ packaging.

This puts clients with wheat allergies at risk.

“People with a wheat allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat are at risk of having a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product,” the announcement states.

The company explained that this affects the Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style 3.5-ounce pouches.

Affected products have UPC code 7 87359 17504 6 and have a best buy date of June 20, 2025.

The company was first notified of the contamination when it was contacted last week by a consumer who reported finding the wrong product in the packaging, according to the release.

“To date, no illnesses have been reported,” the FDA said in a statement Friday.

The ad also stated that the products in question were distributed from September 30 to November 11 and could be found “in stand-up resealable bags.”

Product was shipped to distribution centers in 22 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas . , Utah, Virginia and Washington.

Consumers who believe they may have purchased affected products may exchange those products and receive a refund at the original point of purchase.
