Sumter County deputies respond to two incidents at two different schools.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WI) – Sumter County deputies made multiple arrests Friday after two separate fights at different schools.

A student and parent were arrested on assault charges in connection with the incidents.

The first reported fight occurred at RE Davis School, where police say a 17-year-old girl and her mother attacked another student.

Around 9:00 that morning, a member of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office School Office called deputies for assistance.

Investigators say neither the mother nor her student had permission to be on campus.

Nessa Gibson, 36, was charged with 3rd degree assault and battery.

Gibson was taken to the Sumter County Detention Center and is awaiting a bond hearing.

The 17-year-old will have to appear in family court.

“We have to start with love,” said Verlin Johnson’s elementary school uncle. “Love each other, respect each other and take situations calmly instead of making a big deal out of proportion.

Second incident

The second fight happened at Lakewood High School in Sumter. Investigators say the 17-year-old attacked the deputy after attacking two students.

Sumter County investigators say they were called to the school around 9:22 a.m. after a 17-year-old attacked two other students.

The 17-year-old struck the deputy during the arrest, authorities said.

The deputy was treated at the hospital and was soon released.

The 17-year-old was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice and will also have to appear in Family Court.
