Manchester United player ratings: Casemiro struggles as Andre Onana saves his teammates with stunning performance

MANCHESTER UNITED began the Ruben Amorim era with a 1-1 draw away to Ipswich.

Marcus Rashford needed just 81 seconds to give the Red Devils the lead at Portman Road, heading home Amad Diallo’s cross.

But Ipswich hit back when Omari Hutchinson’s shot deflected off Nossair Mazraoui.

And it was the newly promoted team who were pushing for victory in the second period.

Andre Onana, Amorima’s No. 1, kept the score level with a number of impressive saves to share the points.

Here’s how SunSport’s Charlie Wyatt rated the Manchester United players’ performances.

ANDRE ONANA – 7/10

United’s best player. Two key goals denied Liam Delap but there was no chance of Omari Hutchinson’s deflected goal.

He then saved Conor Chaplin’s shot in the 87th minute.

NUSSAR-MAZRAOUI – 5

He took a shot from the right side of a three-man defence, but had a poor save on goal.

MATTHIJS DE LIGHT – 5

He has been a suspect this season and would probably be better suited to a back three, although Delap is still struggling.

JOHNNY EVANS – 5

The 36-year-old was pursued by Ipswich due to his lack of pace and it was no surprise that he was substituted.

AMAD DIALLO – 6

Got incredibly well past Jens Cajuste and crossed for Rashford’s early goal, but was still a threat in the end.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 5

Some nice moments going forward, but it’s too easy in this position in front of a back three.

CASEMIRO – 4

I was lucky to start ahead of Manuel Ugarte and he was really bad.

He struggled throughout the match before being substituted and may have blocked Hutchinson’s shot.

DIOGO DALOT – 5

Not suited to the left wing-back role, although he stayed there when Luke Shaw arrived because the England international replaced Evans in the back three.

Amorim needs a LOT of time in training to fix Manchester United… unfortunately he won’t get it, writes Charlie Wyatt

At least in theory, the only way forward for Manchester United is writes Charlie Wyatt.

We’re almost a third of the way through this Premier League season and it’s still staggering to see United lurking in 12th place.

They managed only four wins with a goal difference of 0. Only Everton, Crystal Palace and Southampton scored less.

It’s certainly not a false position and the point at Ipswich demonstrated what a huge job Ruben Amorim has to do.

United fans chanted their new manager’s name throughout the game.

They also gave the players a rapturous ovation after the final whistle, and while it was an improvement on some performances this season, the bar was set quite low.

Optimistic club fans will see their team trail the top four by just six points. Ultimately, however, it is difficult to imagine United reaching last season’s eighth position as they look worse.

United’s solid defense will improve and they will be helped by a three-man formation at the back, but you have to wonder where the goals will come from. Marcus Rashford struck in the 81st second before missing the rest of his 68 minutes on the pitch.

Rasmus Hoylund and Joshua Zirkzee were also introduced in this double change midway through the second half but did not add anything. What a terrible pairing they turned out to be and United fans would trade them both for Ipswich’s Liam Delap.

Amorim was not happy about Rashford’s goal and walked around his technical area looking worried.

Every time there was a break in the game, he called the players for instructions.

Alejandro Garnacho headed onto the touchline a couple of times, and there were also words for Diogo Dalot, Casemiro and Jonny Evans.

Amorim, a coach with infectious enthusiasm, hopes he can get his message across to all the players in the next few weeks.

But the problem for the Portuguese coach was that it was the first of 10 games in 33 days.

What he really needs is training periods without playing in the middle of the week, but he doesn’t have that luxury.

BRUNO FERNANDES – 5

Some of his performances together were good, but United need a captain who can inspire this team, and Fernandes is not that man.

12 minutes before the end of the match, he shot a free kick wide of the post.

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 5

In the first half, Ruben Amorim was called twice for instructions.

Saved by a decent save from Aro Muric 50 seconds into the second half.

MARCUS RASHFORD – 6

He was criticized for his basketball trip to New York, so scoring after 80 seconds was two fingers up for his critics, but he didn’t offer much after that.
