New dedicated leisure centers coming to New South Wales

New dedicated leisure centers coming to New South Wales

Back in June the government confirmed plans to open five new special entertainment centers (SEP) throughout Sydney – part of it Six-part plan to revitalize Sydney’s nightlife. Recent vigorous reforms have transformed Sydney step by step – with the outdated rule about standing while drinking alcohol has been repealed, the registration rule for clubs and RSLs has been removedAnd new rules have been introduced for residents moving to SEP (which makes nightlife much more achievable)). Now the Government has announced details of a huge new grant program available to suburbs looking to develop into dedicated leisure centres, paving the way for many more night-time zones to emerge across the state.

Earlier this year Music and night-time economy minister John Graham has described the government’s vigorous reforms as “rebuilding the night-time economy quarter by quarter, quarter by quarter” – and creating more SEPs is essential to making this approach work. , new The SEP Kickstart Grant Program will provide councils that have committed to establishing a SEP in their area the opportunity to apply for funding ranging from $50,000 to $200,000. Grant money will be used to attract more SEPs (such as the one already being actively discussed in Enmore) to life in Sydney and New South Wales.

Benefits of SEP status include increased event flexibility, expanded licensing, and rules to prevent events from being closed after one noise complaint. Following the success of the Enmore Road pilot project (which led to many new discoveries in the area), the NSW Government is keen to see more SEPs popping up across the state to provide more power to our cities and towns after dark.

Currently, Balmain’s Darling Street is on track to achieve SGP statusBurwood Council, Inner West Council and Sutherland County Council are among ten councils that have already committed to exploring the potential of SEPs in their areas. Just last week Inner West Council has confirmed that they will move forward with plans to create six new SEPs in the Inner West, with SEPs to be created in Balmain, Dulwich Hill, Leichhardt, Rozelle and two areas in Marrickville.

“Including more SEPs through additional guidance and grants will be a major boost for councils wanting to support their unique local community entertainment areas.” 24/7 Economic Commissioner Michael Rodriguez explained.
