San Francisco 49ers defensive end Brock Purdy underwent an MRI early last week after suffering a shoulder injury in the team’s Week 11 game against the Seattle Seahawks. The team initially believed the injury only required rest and remained optimistic that he would be ready for the Week 12 decider against the Green Bay Packers.

However, after Purdy was severely limited during practice, the 49ers ruled him out of Friday’s game. His status for next weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills remains “in question.”

On Sunday morning, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that Purdy underwent a second MRI after he had significant difficulty throwing during Thursday’s practice. He eventually left the session to receive treatment for a sore shoulder, canceling a post-practice press conference with reporters and raising serious doubts about his availability this weekend.

“So last week against Seattle he actually hurt his shoulder, and on Monday he had an MRI that showed only a shoulder sprain,” Glazer said. “Tuesday, Wednesday, training. They thought he was keeping the right pace there. And then, on Thursday, he went out and tried to quit.

“So, no one knows that he had another MRI on Thursday, but it didn’t show anything else. So they’re kind of living with the question of when he’s going to get back there. They’re going to just try to rehabilitate him, hopefully he’ll be back next week. They just don’t know right now.”

Despite the setback, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the 49ers remain optimistic about Purdy’s chances to play against the Bills. The team does not see the injury as a long-term problem, although they acknowledge some uncertainty.

“49ers believe QB Brock Purdy will be able to return next Sunday in Buffalo despite shoulder soreness,” Schefter wrote. “Again, they also thought he would be able to start today in Green Bay before he couldn’t. However, there doesn’t seem to be much concern at the moment.”
