Silo’s Graham Yost helped me cast Steve Zahn for season two and I couldn’t agree more.

TV schedule for 2024 had good news for fans of the Apple TV+ drama Silagesince the mystery episode began in the second season. As we previously noted the return with a summary Silage actors’ reactions to the season 1 finaleThe end of this episode introduced the world to Steve Zahn’s mysterious Solo, and his brief appearance in the season two premiere left us with a lot of questions.

One of the first, at least in my opinion, was how the iconic comedic actor was cast in a role that continues his recent run of refreshingly dark material. And how could I ask Silage From creator/showrunner Graham Yost’s own thoughts on the thought process that led to this fantastic choice, I couldn’t agree more with the points made.

The reasons why Silo chose Steve Zahn to play Steve Zahn are as amazing as you think

You’re probably asking the screen, “Hey Mike, why are we talking about Steve Zahn from Episode 1 after Episode 2 aired?” Well, that’s a good question – and the answer is that next week’s third episode, “Solo”, is going to take us back to the usual shifting perspectives that switch between Juliet’s (Rebecca Ferguson) quest in Bunker 17 and the brewing uprising that Bernard (Tim Robbins) was seen getting ready in Episode 2, “Order.”

Character-wise, Steve Zahn’s Solo looks like he’s going to be Very important for the future of humanity. The man’s acting skills made him feel overwhelmed again; which is fantastic after Mr. Zahn got involved Righteous Gems The third season and its enhanced prostheticsWhite Lotus season. So when I asked Graham Yost why he chose this performing work, he told CinemaBlend this:

It’s starting to sound like “The Infinity Pit” by Rebecca Ferguson from Tom Cruise stories started putting pressure on her. At least that’s what I think after Mr. Yost’s praise for Steve Zahn and his on-set chemistry. Silage stage partner. Is Solo the cutie or what? The expanded context of this moment has become one hell of an exciting time for “The Engineer” as he begins the process of questioning the world Silage all over again.

But now that we’re about to start jumping between the stories of Bunker 17 and Bunker 18, the question of who Steve Zahn’s character is and how he affects the overall story will become crucial to what happens next. And with that comes questions about how Juliet’s new friend will warm up to her, a development that draws an amusing parallel between the first two seasons of the supposed four-season story.

How Solo and Juliet’s growing friendship will play out in The Bunker Season 2

Knowing what we do with Juliet Nichols, SilageThe main character is a man of few words and limited in patience. This behavior helps when you work in engineering, and we can even see the origins of this trope in “The Engineer,” which shows us how young Juliet first met her spiritual mother, Martha Walker (Harriet Walter).

So naturally, you don’t want to pit this kind of introverted character against someone who craves connection. At least, that’s what you’d do if you were actively trying to avoid an intriguing story, so Graham Yost’s explanation of how Solo both lives up to and rejects its abrupt introduction seems to set this thematic path:

He just clings to Juliet. I mean, he doesn’t want her to touch him. Yes, I’m afraid of it. But he wants to communicate with her, and she is not a talkative person. You’re angry and she’s fixing something in Bunker 18. If someone talks too much, it’s like, “Find someone else.” I just want to do this job.” We thought it would be fun.

This fear of being touched is the only place where Steve Zahn’s introverted character crosses paths with his potential friend. This aspect also reminded me of a conversation I had with Rebecca Ferguson about the previous season, in which Mission: Impossible the actor reveals himself Juliet Silage role in the first season following:

(Juliet) can control tools and machines, but when it comes to controlling the tools of the human psyche, (it’s) a little more difficult for her when she’s an introvert and she doesn’t really like people touching her, being too close to her. her. … And she realizes that (in) the way forward she sometimes hurts people and pisses them off.

A diverse team that can save the world. This is something that seems ripe for Steve Zahn’s acting skills, even if Silage uses them for more dramatic purposes. Applying what we’ve learned here, I think I have a good idea of what Silage could be related to Solo’s character. Not to mention, I think we actually saw another clue to his mysterious backstory thanks to further comments from showrunner Graham Yost.

What do I think Solo’s role would be in the overall Silo story?

Returning to the story of The Order for a moment, we see Bernard’s leadership skills put to the test. The attempt to prepare for the revolution that the Pact seems to have predicted in its text ties into the opening flashback we saw in The Engineer, where Mine 17 began an open rebellion. As we saw in Silage season premiere and Solo’s imprisonment in the vault he calls home, this fight ended in disaster.

However, this pre-credits history lesson potentially becomes a little clearer when reading Graham Yost’s ongoing remarks about why Steve Zahn was cast in the role. I saved this last point for last because it relates deeply to what I think we will learn. Silage upcoming episodes:

Without going into Spoilerland, we know that he was much younger when he entered that vault than he is now. And I will just say that there is a mystery to his character, and part of it is his behavior, that he has not had contact with people for a long time, 35 years… and you will see in the subsequent episodes what happens to his character, how good, so bad. I think the previous era of history we saw at the top Silage Season two is not only about the overthrow of the Shaft 17 government, but also Solo’s origin story. And if my hypothesis is correct, young Tim, the torchbearer, may be the child who grew up during the years of isolation… and become the man we now know as Solo.

Who better to stop the uprising in Bunker 18 than someone who has lived through similar confrontations? And given that the two “silos” are linked by living history, what better way to learn more about how the entire system was created and for what purpose? I know there are a lot of questions, but I also have to admit that we only ask them for two reasons: Silage a fantastically crafted plot and a winning performance from Steve Zahn that only looks like it’s only going to get better.
