Despite the unexpected timing of his release, Daniel Jones and the New York Giants don’t appear to have any animosity toward each other over how things have played out.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, both Jones and the Giants are “at peace” with how the situation was handled.

Giants president John Mara announced Friday that Jones had been released following a meeting between the two sides.

The decision to part ways with Jones appeared to be made when head coach Brian Daboll announced Monday that Tommy DeVito is set to start in Week 12 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Drew Lock serving as the backup.

While Jones was expected to be released in the offseason, this now allows both teams to get a full break at least two months ahead of schedule.

There was no doubt that the Giants would be looking for a new quarterback before the 2025 season. They have lost five games in a row and currently own the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 draft, but trail the Jacksonville Jaguars by just one loss as they have the worst record in the NFL.

Jones, who is expected to clear his waiver to potentially sign with a new team as early as Monday, will have an opportunity to make his mark sometime before the end of this season.

If things go well for Jones with the new coaching staff, it could lead to him getting the backup job in 2025. It’s unlikely the team will be able to guarantee him a starting job next season given how he’s been playing since the start. 2023 campaign.

The Giants gave Jones every opportunity to prove he could be their long-term cornerback. He spent six years with the organization after being selected sixth overall in the 2019 draft.

Jones had a very good 2022 season in his first year with Daboll as head coach. He threw for 3,205 yards, rushed for 708 yards and scored 22 touchdowns, helping the Giants reach the playoffs and upsetting the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Wild Card round.

This would ultimately be the high point for Jones in a Giants uniform. He finished his tenure in New York with a record of 24-44-1 in 69 games as a starter.
