Firelands Physician Group Vascular Surgeons Achieve Major Stroke Prevention Milestone

Firelands Physician Group’s vascular surgical team recently completed its 100th transcarotid artery revascularization procedure, according to a press release.

Transcarotid artery revascularization is a minimally invasive approach for patients requiring carotid artery treatment, the report said.

The procedure was performed by Matthew Langenberg, MD, fellowship-trained vascular surgeon, and Jeffrey Buhrer, MD, fellowship-trained vascular surgeon.

“TCAR is an excellent stroke prevention option for patients with plaque buildup in the two main arteries in the neck that supply blood to the brain,” Langenberg said in a release. “TCAR is significantly less invasive, so patients typically recover more easily and can return to their normal lives more quickly.

Every year in the United States, someone has a stroke every 40 seconds; and every four minutes someone dies from a stroke, the report said.

Statistics show that about 40% of stroke deaths occur in men and 60% in women, the report said. The risk of stroke more than doubles every decade after age 55.
