Glinda is “a little in the closet”

Glinda is “a little in the closet”

Ariana Grande and Kristin Chenoweth believe their “Evil” character Glinda could be part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Grande, who plays the iconic Good Witch in the new film adaptation, was the first to reflect on her character’s sexuality when she and co-star Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba, discussed how fans portray their leads as a romantic couple.

“You know, maybe Glinda hid in the closet a little!” Grande told Gay Times in an interview published Thursday. “If there was time, well, you never know, give him a little more time!”

Grande, 31, and Erivo, 37, explained that Glinda and Elphaba have such a “deep” connection that they can understand why some fans want the characters to date.

“It’s just true love, and I think it goes beyond sexuality,” the pop star continued. “There’s a kind of deep security in each other, so they’re probably releasing it.”

Meanwhile, Erivo, who came out as bisexual in 2022, said Elphaba “goes where the wind blows.”

“I think she loves Glinda. I think she loves love and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the deep connection they both have,” the actress said.

“It’s a relationship. That’s true love and that’s probably why people spread it because what they build with each other is an unbreakable bond and love.”

Grande agreed, saying their characters found “truth and trust” in “a safe space for each other, which is what all relationships should be.”

“I thought so too when…” she commented on Instagram.

Shortly after Grande’s comments about Glinda made headlines, Chenoweth, who starred in the 2003 Broadway musical, shared her thoughts.

“I thought so too when…” The 56-year-old Tony winner commented on Instagram later Thursday.

Fans have long speculated that “Wicked” has many LGBTQIA+ themes, including the meaning behind the song “Defying Gravity,” Elphaba’s story of facing adversity for being different, and the overall message that it does not meet the traditional expectations of society.

Grande and Erivo called Oz a “weird place” in an interview with Gay Times.

“Oz is just a celebration of uniqueness and everyone in Oz is so beautiful, and I don’t even think that’s a conscious discussion or decision,” the “7 Rings” singer told Gay Times. “Everyone is so beautiful and strange.”

Wicked: Part One is in theaters now.
