The PSVR 2 is now cheaper than the Quest 3S, and I know which one I’d buy this Black Friday.

I’d like to think that somewhere out there, Mark Zuckerberg is cursing the heavens like a Disney villain because the PSVR 2 got a major Black Friday price cut this morning. This comes just a month after Meta released the Quest 3S, whose entire USP was being a more affordable VR device than everyone else. I tested the Quest 3S in preparation for our review, and since the larger 256GB SKU now costs more than Sony’s headset, I know which one I’d rather buy.

PSVR 2 is, in my opinion, the best virtual reality headset on the market. You’ll need a PS5 or gaming PC to run it, but its specs and features make it a truly high-end VR gaming device. Despite the more premium approach, you can now get the Horizon Call of the Mountain package for just $349 on Amazon thanks black friday.

This is by far the cheapest price for the headset since launch – a full $100 more than the Days of Play discount provided earlier this year. Black Friday VR headset deals and Black Friday Meta Quest deals don’t include the Quest 3 or 3S yet, and even though the most affordable 128GB 3S costs less than this PSVR 2 deal, I’d say that the Sony Visor is the headset worth buying right now. .

Should you buy PSVR 2 this Black Friday?

In 2024, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to virtual reality devices. The best VR headsets have welcomed a host of new competitors into the fold, and even if Apple’s Vision Pro isn’t all that great for gaming, it’s once again generating plenty of interest in the mainstream tech market.

If you’re looking for that futuristic metaversal spatial computing experience in mixed reality, then the Meta Quest 3 and its more affordable sibling the Quest 3S will be more appealing. These devices don’t require you to be tethered to a console or gaming PC to operate, and they give you great versatility.

However, if you already have a PS5 or one of the best gaming PCs, I personally don’t see the need for a separate VR headset. The Quest 3 and 3S are very impressive, but they don’t deliver the gaming power that the insides of a PS5 or gaming PC can provide.

In terms of technical characteristics, Sony’s second headset surpasses most of its competitors. You get 110° Viewing angle, whereas the Quest 3S has only 96°. The Quest 3S’s eye resolution is 2064 x 2208, which on paper is more impressive than the PSVR 2s’ 2000 x 2040 eye resolution, but for me nothing beats Sony’s OLED displays. The precision and detail when your eyes are that close adds a whole new level of graphical excellence that, no matter how hard they try, the Quest 3 and 3S simply can’t come that close. If you’re playing on PS5, you also get eye tracking and foveation rendering, as well as smart haptic feedback in the PSVR 2 headband.

I would also say that the controller tracking on the PSVR 2 is much better in games as well. To be more practical, the Quest 3 series removed the tracking rings on the controllers, which is both a blessing and a curse. I noticed in Blade & Sorcery Nomad on the Meta headsets that hand tracking really isn’t what I’d like for this type of game. In a similar experience with PSVR 2, I never had these issues.

Of course, when purchasing any gaming equipment, you should consider what games are available for it. Thanks to SteamVR support in PSVR 2 and PC adapter Released earlier this year, this headset now has access to countless virtual reality capabilities if you have a gaming laptop or desktop. Even on PS5, the number of games for it is slowly increasing, with some of the biggest and best releases coming soon, such as Metro Awakening, Alien Rogue Incursion and Skydance Bohemoth.
