‘Dreamer’ Amorim explains how he is ‘different from Mourinho’ at first press conference

Ruben Amorim explained that he is “different” from compatriot Jose Mourinho during his first press conference as new Manchester United manager.

The Red Devils appointed Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s successor on November 1, with the Portuguese coach taking over last week and holding his first training session yesterday.

Amorim has a tough job ahead of him. Manchester United currently 13th in the Premier League after a terrible start to the season and looking for a manager to finally end their more than ten-year run without a league title.

There have been claims that Manchester United will have very little money to spend in the January transfer window as they are close to their fair play financial limits.

When asked at a pre-match press conference ahead of the Red Devils’ trip to Ipswich Town if it was an impossible job, Amorim replied: “No, of course not, I believe it, call me naive, I think I’m right ” guy at the right time, it doesn’t bother me, I truly believe.”

Amorim added about the size of the club: “It’s bigger than what I’m used to, bigger than Sporting, but I get a lot of help, I’m happy and I feel at home.”

“I’m a bit of a dreamer, I believe in myself, I also think the club is the same, we have the same mindset. I have a lot of faith in these players. We have room to improve. I want to try something new. You might think it’s possible, I think it’s possible, we’ll see in the end.”

Mourinho won the League Cup and Europa League double during his two years as Manchester United manager but reportedly left the dressing room unhappy.

Asked about Mourinho’s influence on him, Amorim replied: “Above all, for me and all Portuguese coaches, he showed that we can be the best in the world.

“For a small country, this can put a stamp on everyone. But I’m different from Mourinho, I’m a different person.

“At that time it seemed like he could win anywhere. It’s not the same thing. He was the European champion. I’m not a European champion.

“I’m a different guy in a different moment, football in a different moment. Today football is different.

“I’m the right guy for the moment. I’m a young guy and I understand the players. I will use this to help my players, just like Mourinho did with Chelsea.

“The young guys were like Lampard and other players of that type. This is so unusual. I think I’m the right guy for now.”

Speaking to Mourinho, Amorim continued: “He sent me a message. He said it was a great club with great people. It still is. This is right. Much has changed. Now we are in another building and building a new one.

“I’m a different guy. I have been learning and hope to teach my players a thing or two. This is still the best club in England and we want to win.”
