Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier are close to fitness again but Eddie Howe has not confirmed they will feature on Monday night when Newcastle host West Ham.

Wilson has yet to play this season due to hamstring and back problems, while Trippier has made five Premier League appearances but none since October 5 due to his own hamstring injury.

The Magpies have won their last matches in all competitions so Howe is in no rush to bring the pair back into the starting lineup, but both are close to playing again.

As for Wilson, Howe said at a news conference Friday: “He’s doing well. We expect him to train with the group today.

“Let’s see if he’s fit for West Ham, there’s a chance he could be involved but we’ve got to get through the next few days.”

“I think the most important thing is that Callum will come back and when he comes back he will have a good opportunity to contribute and make a difference.

“We know his importance, but he’s obviously at a delicate stage in his return because you have to get the last bits right.”

“We need to learn from the previous problems we had and try to maintain them.

Howe said of Trippier: “I’d say he’s a little closer. He trained yesterday, trained well, felt good, had no side effects and looked sharp.

“But this was the first day of training, so again, we’re in a similar position in the sense that we’re at the very end of rehab and you’re going to have to navigate the last few days.”

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles remain on the long-term injured list, while Emil Kraft will also be out for several weeks with a shoulder problem.

“Only Emil Kraft, who had surgery, we expect him to miss 6 to 8 weeks,” Howe said of headaches from other injuries. “So it’s a big blow for us to lose Emil – he’s been such a consistent player.

“So he’ll continue to rehab, but other than that we’re fine.”

Dan Byrne will also miss the match against West Ham due to suspension.
