A man has been shot dead in Surry Hills during a major police operation and the shooter is still on the run.

Around 7.45pm on Friday, emergency services were called to Baptist Street, near Cleveland Street in the city centre, following reports of shots fired, NSW Police told SkyNews.com.au.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, suffered a gunshot wound and the shooter remains at large.

The man was treated at the scene by paramedics and emergency services.

He will be taken to hospital for further treatment.

Dozens of police have already cordoned off the streets.

Real Time Traffic Sydney says Cleveland Street is closed in both directions and is urging people to avoid the area.

“A crime scene has been established and an investigation has commenced,” NSW Police said in a statement.
