‘We deserve a chance to bounce back’: Guardiola after extending contract with Manchester City to 2 years

Manchester, November 22 (IANS): Pep Guardiola has confirmed his commitment to Manchester City by signing a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2027. The decorated manager, who revolutionized English football with his innovative tactics and relentless pursuit of excellence, has said he may not quit at a difficult time for the team.

“I felt I couldn’t leave now, that’s all,” Guardiola said in a statement. “I think we deserve, after four defeats in a row, a chance to bounce back and try to turn things around. I love being here. I love being the manager of this club.”

Guardiola’s decision to extend his contract ensures he will spend more than a decade at City, a remarkable achievement in modern football. Since joining the club in 2016, the Spaniard has won 18 major trophies, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the club’s historic first Champions League triumph.

Beyond the trophies, Guardiola has built City into a world power admired for his dynamic and engaging style of play.

“Manchester City means so much to me,” added Guardiola. “This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many amazing moments together. I have special feelings for this football club. That’s why I’m so excited to stay for two more seasons.”

City currently trail Liverpool by five points in the Premier League table and Guardiola admitted this season has been difficult, with a four-game losing streak highlighting a rare dip in form. However, he remains optimistic about the team’s future and is interested in increasing their trophies.

“Hopefully we can now add more trophies to those we have already won. That will be my goal,” he said.

Guardiola’s decision to stay comes amid an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct by the club, a matter which has been categorically denied. Despite these external challenges, Guardiola’s contract extension provides stability and a clear signal of intent as City seek to regain dominance in English and European football.

“I have everything a coach could want and I value that very much,” Guardiola said. “Together we will continue to move forward, turning challenges into opportunities.”
