Yashasvi Jaiswal’s much-awaited debut in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ended in heartbreak as he lasted just a few deliveries.

Mitchell Starc showed a beauty at fuller length, just outside off stump, with extra bounce unique to Perth.

Jaiswal, looking to move up, played with stiff hands, resulting in debutant Nathan McSweeney taking a powerful lead at gully.

IMAGES: Fans were quick to draw comparisons between Jaiswal and Prithvi Shaw, who had also previously come under scrutiny for his vulnerability to bounce in Australian conditions.

While Jaiswal’s dismissal came quickly, Devdutt Padikkal endured a torturous stay at the crease, eating 23 deliveries before falling to Josh Hazlewood. The left-hander struggled against Starc’s relentless attacks, stopping 17 goals while he was either taken down or moved unconvincingly to the wing on eight occasions.

Hazlewood eventually ended Padikkal’s innings with a classic Test match dismissal. The ball over the wicket prompted Padikkal to play defensively for fear of him straightening up. Instead, he held his line and kissed the outside edge, landing safely in Alex Carey’s gloves.

The double failure of left-handers Jaiswal and Padikkal on the opening day of the Perth Test led to an inevitable overhaul of India’s new top order.

“Jaiswal is too talented to be written off after one poor delivery. He’ll get back to normal. The real test is how he handles the second serve,” one fan tweeted.
