Hawks redraws flag hero, Lions select ex-San

HAWTHORN re-listed as Premier League hero Jack Gunstonwhile Brisbane added the former Gold Coast tall forward to their squad Sam Day in the only two picks in the Telstra AFL pre-season draft.

Gunston was delisted at season’s end with the promise that he would be re-drafted in either the preseason or rookie draft as the Hawks sought to open up more roster spots for the national draft, which was held Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Meanwhile, Premier League Lions have thrown Day a lifeline after the first Sun was sacked by his former club. Day will add valuable experience and growth to the Lions’ forward lineup after they lost Joe Daniher to retirement following the Grand Final win over Sydney.

The first surprise of the day came early in the rookie draft when Gold Coast selected the former Dockers athlete. Max Knobelwho has been promised a place on the Fremantle list in 2025.

Former St Kilda defender Ben Paton is heading to Sydney after the Swans swooped on the midfielder while AFL Academy prospect Archer Day-Weeksmissed out on selection for the national draft, joined Essendon.

A total of 11 new faces were selected in the Rookie Draft, with several experienced players also being re-listed as clubs rotated their rosters throughout the trade and draft periods.
