Federal TSA directors say they plan to screen 18.3 million people during the Thanksgiving travel week, setting a new holiday record.

“Everything will be busier with traffic, parking and a lot of families traveling through the airport,” said Jim Spriggs, TSA Federal Security Director in Illinois. “We strongly recommend that you arrive at the airport two hours before your flight… avoid stress and give yourself a little more time.”

Officials expect Tuesday and Wednesday to be the busiest of the weekend, with Sunday, Dec. 1, to be the busiest for return travelers.

Air traffic at Chicago airports reached and in some cases exceeded pre-pandemic levels over the recent holiday weekend, officials said. High volumes of traffic can also mean longer lines at TSA checkpoints.

At O’Hare on Thursday, federal security experts reminded travelers they need to “pack smart” to avoid being slowed down at security checkpoints.

“If you can spill it, spray it, smear it, pump it or pour it out, then it is not a solid substance and should be placed in your check bag,” Spriggs said.

They also urge passengers to start packing with an empty bag to ensure they don’t accidentally leave a weapon inside. These mistakes can cost travelers up to $15,000 in fines.

“More than 125 firearms have been found in carry-on luggage here at O’Hare and Midway combined (this year),” Spriggs said. “When we discover prohibited items, these items must be submitted for inspection, and their movement takes a few more minutes. and the more items we find, the longer it will take for everyone to get through the checkpoint.”
